Why Do Two SPE-03 Systems Have Their Own Names?

At Colorado School of Mines the lab's two SPE-03 systems have names: Phineas and Ferb. The nicknames were given by graduate students who have become such fans of the systems that they felt they deserved names of their own.
During a recent visit, Evan Chu met with the team to discuss their PFAS workflows, including EPA Methods 533 and 1633, and ongoing work related to emerging PFAS compounds.
One topic that sparked particular interest was Ultra Short Chain PFAS (USC). As laboratories continue to expand the scope of PFAS analysis, discussions around new extraction approaches and method development are becoming increasingly important.
What stood out most was the team's commitment to advancing PFAS science and exploring new analytical challenges.
It's always rewarding to see how laboratories make these systems part of their daily work, and even more memorable when they become important enough to earn names of their own.
