Automating EPA 525 using Mini-Disks and Presto System at the Maryland Department of Health

EPA 525 using Mini-Disks and Presto System at the Maryland Department of Health

Semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water, such as pesticides and PAHs, are monitored under EPA Method 525, a common SPE-based method for extracting and analyzing these pollutants. The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) evaluated a workflow using PromoChrom’s Mini-disks with the Presto SPE system for 22 target compounds.

MDH validation highlights:

- High efficiency: 8 x 1L samples extracted in 81 minutes

- Lower solvent use: final extract volume of 19mL

- Improved clogging resistance: Mini-disk has 5x the surface area of a 6 mL cartridge

The Mini-disk’s compact size and large surface area enable faster flow rates with lower solvent volumes, offering the advantages of both cartridges and disks. Paired with the Presto SPE system, it provides a robust and efficient automated solution for extracting SVOCs following EPA Method 525.
