Raymond Chen has a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and over 5 years of experience in renowned commercial labs such as SGS Axys. He is familiar with different methods and best laboratory practices. Being an end user of multiple laboratory instruments, he offers valuable insights from the customer's perspective. Combined with his background in engineering, Raymond is the perfect candidate to translate laboratory needs to product features. We are impressed by his eye for detail and ability to find the simplest solutions. PromoChrom's future product line up will appreciably benefit from his inputs.

PFAS Extraction - October 2019 Snapshot

October 5, 2019

October 3rd marked our 16th and 17th SPE-03 system installations for PFAS in drinking water. After trying out one system earlier this year and passing all validation with flying colors, a government lab purchased 2 more units. Just 3 days into the installation, the 2 systems were already tested for background, IDC (Initial Demonstration of Capability) and two batches of MRL (Minimum Reporting Level) confirmation. PromoChrom is honored to have a good working relationship with this state-of-the-art laboratory. Validation results of 1st system shown below:

Our first PFAS customer in USA, Merit Labs, has been working with us since last September to optimize the SPE-03 for EPA Method 537. They are a well-recognized testing lab in the State of Michigan and experts in the field of PFAS. Starting in February 2019, they migrated from the vacuum manifold to our automated system. The SPE-03 has freed up a lot of their resources and has produced good and consistent results. We recently learned that it even had better surrogate recovery for some complex sample matrices compared to using the vacuum manifold.

In between our first and most current installations, we've helped many labs including government, university, private and commercial with their PFAS extraction, which are not limited to EPA Method 537. Some are using WAX and mixed-mode cartridges to extract shorter and longer chain compounds. For each customer, we spend 3 days on-site to ensure that the system is optimized for their application.

Having proven itself as a trusted solution for PFAS, the SPE-03 has entered customer tenders in collaboration with leading chromatographic companies. The number of overseas inquiries are also steadily increasing. We look forward to many more opportunities in the future.

Exploring New Frontiers - Protein Purification

August 14, 2019

A customized version of the SPE-03 set foot for the first time in the cold and unchartered territory of protein purification.

The SPE-03 is seen here working at 4 degrees Celsius to purify 8 protein samples. The concept is quite similar to solid phase extraction. Due to the flexibility of our SPE-03 design, a few simple customizations were sufficient to get the system up and running.

Update:

A 2nd customer has ordered a similar system and we are hopeful that the SPE-03 will be a very helpful tool in this new market.

NACRW 2019

July 21-24, 2019

This year, we unveiled the latest version of the SPE-03 at NACRW, featuring a larger touch display, easier sample loading from the sides and an overall cleaner design. The system has been a popular choice for extracting water samples but is just as effective with food samples. A lot of end users were impressed by the small foot print and ergonomics of this 8-channel SPE system. Being easily compatible with different SPE cartridges and sample containers, the SPE-03 can readily replace existing manual SPE processes.

We also displayed a poster discussing the considerations of automating PFAS extraction following EPA Method 537.1. PFAS is a growing concern especially in the USA but current methods can only extract and analyze a small group of targeted compounds. The development of more effective methods can be expedited with the help of an auomated SPE system. The SPE-03 has already been used with both SDVB and WAX cartridges for PFAS in drinking water.

During the tradeshow, we were contacted by a couple of large analytical instrument companies for collaboration. The SPE-03 was brought to their attention through satisfied customers. We look forward to seeing more laboratories benefitting from this great system!
